Banksy Graffiti or Art ?

September 30th, 2007 | Category: Street Art

During my recent visit to Bristol I found and photographed a couple of Banksy paintings. If you haven’t heard of Banksy where have you been?

I love the humour but also the way he mixes up popular images to create art which raises issues by contrasting serious images with some kind of twist.

Banksy Trapped Rose

I love the way now some buildings are effectively now part of a piece of artwork, and this photo I took of the trapped rose image which has now been framed is particulary ironic because some people would consider it grafitti yet others consider a piece of art worth framing and preserving. Does this mean a building would be worth more because of the art painted on it? It’s weird how this art which is anti commercial and political has now become so valuable.
I’ve always loved various forms of street art, particulary in New York – you never know what’s round the next street. Imagine though if more artists started to paint around cities in they’re own style and these were also framed on random buildings – would it then become like a huge gallery or would it take away from the fun of finding original and creative work in a random way?

I spent a sunny afternoon in Dublin on Saturday and popped into this new gallery which had some really interesting photography. Theres a great collection of images of neon street signs and great black & white shoots of some rock n roll legends. Take a look!
